SOARing Unschoolers (SOuthern ARizona Unschoolers) is a group for
unschoolers in the Tucson area and throughout Southern Arizona, with
the goal of creating a community of like-minded families in the region
for support, discussions, and get-togethers. We like to have fun with
our kids and each other! Our group currently has nearly 40 families. Our members are currently living soaring lives with unschooling in Tucson, Benson, Oro Valley, Vail,
Sahuarita, and Sierra Vista.
This is a social group for families who are currently unschooling or
homeschooling in a relaxed way and moving toward unschooling.
Discussions about the joys and challenges of unschooling are welcome,
as is information about interesting events. Debates about the merits of
unschooling (or curricula) and hard-hitting discussions about what is
and what is not unschooling are best left to other lists and groups. Similarly,
those who are looking for information about unschooling or who are
still considering whether home/unschooling will work for their family
would be better served by other lists (such as the Unschooling Basics yahoo list).
It is understood that each family is at a different point in their
journey. Not every member in this group will be a Radical Unschooler; some
may be relaxed homeschoolers interested in unschooling but struggling
with concerns about math or some other bugaboo. What we all share is an
active desire to move toward unschooling--to eliminate required
subjects, assignments, and tests, and replace those with a stimulating,
enriched environment and lots of parental support for kids in pursuing
their interests and passions.
This group is neither a subgroup of nor intended to compete with any
other group. Unschoolers in the Tucson area may also want to join
Sonoran Desert Homeschoolers to take
advantage of the opportunities a larger inclusive group can offer.
We are in the process of establishing weekly park gatherings and other
activities -- please join our yahoo list and check the posts and calendar for the current days and
locations. We strive to alternate locations and which day we meet so best to include as many families as possible. We welcome all ideas for new outings and meeting locations!
